About

Center for Community Enhancement (CENEC)

For a long time, Cameroon was considered a peaceful, democratic pillar in the West African region, until underlying conflicts between marginalized Anglophone groups and the predominant Francophone groups intensified. What began as mostly peaceful protest in the form of strikes on the part of Cameroon’s Anglophone groups escalated into violent, armed confrontations in 2016. Since then, especially in the north of the country, it has been in the grip of a serious security crisis. Additional challenges include frequent terrorist attacks by the Islamist group Boko Haram, poverty and inequality, as well as the rapidly advancing desertification in northern Cameroon, which makes it difficult to cultivate the land.

Refugee movements lead mainly toward Nigeria but also to the tropical south of Cameroon, which is characterized by rainforests. But here, too, there are problems: Deforestation of tropical trees is shrinking the region’s rainforests at an unprecedented rate. And plastic waste, as in so many countries around the world, also represents a major environmental threat. Polluted rivers and beaches are the result; lack of education about proper disposal and the harmful effects of plastic on nature are the causes.

At the end of 2021, the country counted around 937,000 internally displaced people. For many people who have fled northern Cameroon, it is difficult to build a new home in the south of the country. Children and young people in particular need shelters that welcome them with open arms and make it easier for them to arrive in their new lives.

Vision

For equality of opportunity among the genders and conservation of bio diversity

Our Mission

To empower and support the male and female demography in combating socio-economic, health and environmental issues in line with global agenda for sustainable development

Our Objectives

a) Poverty alleviation within communities
b) Promotion of bio diversity conservation
c) Enforcing and fostering sustainable development within the community

Climate action

We have been very active in the field to educate and sensitize the population on the causes and effects of climate change and possible mitigating factors through various climate actions. Our climate action campaigns go from primary schools to secondary schools and from the university to the community, not living out community leaders. So far, we have planted over 6,000 trees on a degraded piece of land in the south-west region of Cameroon to promote the tree planting culture in our communities and hundreds more fruit trees on different school campuses, with the fruits serving as food for the students.

Waste management deals with all types of waste including industrial, biological, household, municipal, organic, biomedical, radioactive wastes. CENEC-Cameroon is interest in the proper management of these waste and focuses more on solving the plastic pollution problem. Our efforts are evident from community sensitization and engagement to the creation of a social enterprise that collects large tons of plastics on weekly basis and as a result creating jobs and securing the livelihood of families who work as daily collectors.

Sustainable waste management

Women/girls empowerment

CENEC-Cameroon empowers women and girls by giving them skills and training on entrepreneurship so as to promote gender equality and build resilient female communities.

Sports

Through our child protection programs, we run a child friendly space which seeks to provide a conducive atmosphere for young people to engage in to sporting activities like soccer trainings and cycling. We also mobilize and engage young people in environmental protection through soccer championships (the eco soccer championship)

Beach / River clean ups

Thousands of plastic bottles get into the ocean via river channels on a daily basis, and if action is not taken, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean in the near future. This is why we gather tons of plastic through our beach and river clean-up campaigns in a bit to fight marine litter and protect life below water, e.g the sea turtle.
